Collection: Men's Irish Sweaters

The Aran Sweater, also known as the Irish Sweater or fisherman's sweater has its origins West of Ireland, on the cold waters of the North Atlantic Ocean, on the Aran Islands. The mothers and wives of the Irish fishermen and farmers would knit unique heavyweight sweaters for their husbands and sons, out of thick natural sheep’s wool to protect them from the cold. The wool retained oils, which made the sweaters waterproof, durable and warm - suitable for the ruthless weather near the ocean. When their husbands or sons left to go to the sea, the women were left behind, wondering if they would ever come back home. They started knitting the sweaters in different Aran patterns stitches, many of them inspired by the fishermen’s ropes and nets, as symbols of good fortune and warding off bad luck at sea. This is the story of the Aran Sweaters, born out of necessity, and the story of islanders, simple people of Ireland, who unknowingly started a piece of fashion of incredible success. Each one of these fisherman-knit sweaters carries the legacy of Ireland and creates a time portal back to island communities of decades ago.

They are knitted by masters who have enriched their skills over the course of a lifetime. A large variety of Aran knitting patterns are used, either on their own or in combinations: cable, diamond, blackberry, and honeycomb stitches. These beautiful Aran jumpers are sure to bring an authentic feel as well as an elegant modern twist to any outfit. At Tara, you can find anything to your liking, from a traditional heavyweight fisherman sweater or knit merino vest for a classic look to a stylish Aran V-neck cardigan or half zip wool sweater for a business casual outfit. What are Irish sweaters called?

The term "Aran" refers to a type of sweater originating from the Aran Islands located off the western coast of Ireland. These sweaters are commonly referred to as Fisherman sweaters, Aran sweaters, Irish sweaters or simply Aran jumpers.

What is special about Aran sweaters?

Aran sweaters were initially hand-knit by mothers and wives for the fishermen with natural sheep's wool, which retained its oils, making them waterproof and ideal for the variable Irish weather.

Are Aran sweaters itchy?

A genuine Aran Sweater crafted from the finest merino wool is warm, breathable and soft, and should not cause any discomfort against your skin.
